With Niagara on the Lake being roughly only 1.5 hours from Toronto, and about an hour from where we live, we love travelling to this area for day trips. We recently spent the day in Niagara-on-the-Lake with our kids, and it completely stole our hearts every time.
From delicious treats to wide-open parks, there’s so much for kids and adults to love.

Niagara on the Lake Kid Friendly Hotels
Looking to spend a night or even a weekend in Niagara-on-the-lake? There are lots of family friendly places to stay right in the heart of this charming town.
- The Old Angel Inn, this adorable hotel is Ontario’s oldest operating inn. There are 2 two bedroom cottages available, perfect for families!
- Best Western Colonel Butler Inn, right in the heart of the town, has family friendly rooms and the best part, free breakfast!!!
- Staybridge Suites Niagara-On-The-Lake by IHG, this hotel is about 15 minutes from the old town but you’ll get more bang for your buck including an indoor pool and free breakfast.
Best Things to Do in Niagara-on-the-Lake with Kids
1. Wander the Charming Old Town
The heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake is its quaint Old Town, where the streets look like they belong on a postcard. Walking around here is an adventure in itself, especially if your kids love spotting colorful storefronts, horse-drawn carriages, and beautiful flower displays. I’ve heard they have filmed lots of Hallmark movies here for its charm!
Make sure to stop by:
- COWS Ice Cream – Home to some of the creamiest, most delicious ice cream in Canada!
- Maple Leaf Fudge – Watch them make fresh fudge and sample some Canadian maple goodness.
- Just Christmas – A store dedicated to Christmas all year round!
- Scottish Loft – This is a personal favourite for their British chocolate!!
Tip: If your kids get tired of walking, hop on a horse-drawn carriage ride for a cool experience.
2. Visit Fort George National Historic Site
If your kids love history (or just love pretending to be soldiers), Fort George is a must-visit! This 19th-century fort brings history to life with costumed guides, musket demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
Kids can:
- Explore the wooden fort buildings
- Watch soldiers march and fire muskets
- Play old-fashioned games from the 1800s
It’s fun, educational, and gives kids a chance to burn off some energy while technically learning something. My kids love that they hand out activity books to fill out throughout your visit, then at the end, bring it back to the ticket booth to claim your prize!
3. Play at Simcoe Park
Need a break? Head to Simcoe Park, just a block away from the main strip. This shady, spacious park is a great place for kids to run, climb, and play. There’s a playground, splash pad (in the summer), and plenty of picnic spots.
Bring some snacks, let the kids burn off energy, and relax under the trees. There is also a public bathroom here. It’s a perfect stop!
4. Take a Scenic Walk by the Lake
For beautiful views of Lake Ontario and the Niagara river, take a short walk down to Queen’s Royal Park. The best part? The gorgeous waterfront gazebo. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Niagara-on-the-Lake!
Things to do here:
- Enjoy a picnic by the lake.
- Let the kids skip rocks or dip their toes in the water.
- Take family photos with a backdrop of Lake Ontario.
- Follow the trail along the river and climb over rocks (my kids favourite!)
On a clear day, you can even see Toronto’s skyline across the water!
5. Explore Family-Friendly Wineries
Yes, wineries can be kid-friendly, especially in Niagara-on-the-Lake! Many wineries have spacious outdoor areas, picnic tables, and non-alcoholic drinks for kids.

- Ravine Vineyard – Beautiful grounds, a great casual restaurant, and even a little farm area with animals.
Tip: Bring some snacks and games to keep the kids entertained while you sip and relax.

Most restaurants in town are family-friendly, but it’s always a good idea to check if reservations are needed, especially on weekends in summer!
Tips for Visiting Niagara on the Lake with Kids
- Go early or on weekdays – Weekends can be busy, so visiting on a weekday means fewer crowds.
- Bring a stroller or wagon – The town is walkable, but if you have little kids, they might need a break.
- Pack snacks and water – There are plenty of places to eat, but having extra snacks never hurts! We always pack a picnic and enjoy it at one of the parks.
- Dress for the weather – Summers can be hot, and winters can be chilly, check the forecast before you go.
Best Time to Visit Niagara-on-the-Lake with Kids
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for!
Spring (April – June) – Best for Flowers & Fewer Crowds
Spring is a beautiful time to visit when the town comes alive with cherry blossoms and tulips. The weather is mild, making it perfect for walking tours, winery visits, and outdoor play. Plus, it’s less crowded than summer!
Best for: Spring blooms, comfortable weather, quieter visits
Keep in mind the weather in Ontario this time of year can be unpredictable, some days feel like summer, others still feel like winter!
Summer (July – August) – Best for Festivals & Outdoor Fun
Summer is peak tourist season, and for good reason! Everything is open, the parks and splash pads are in full swing, and the town buzzes with festivals, live music and outdoor events.Best for: Warm weather, patios, ice cream, lake views, and festivals
Keep in mind: It gets busy! If visiting in summer, go early in the day to avoid crowds.
Fall (September – October) – Best for Fall Colors & Wine Season
Autumn in Niagara-on-the-Lake is breathtaking! The leaves turn golden, the vineyards are at their peak, and the annual Niagara Grape & Wine Festival happens in September (This year it is Sept 25-28, 2025). It’s the perfect time for a peaceful family getaway with stunning scenery.
Best for: Crisp air, fewer tourists, beautiful fall colors
Keep in mind: It can get chilly, so bring layers!
Winter (November – March) – Best for Christmas Magic & Ice Wine
If you love Christmas vibes, this is a magical time to visit! The town transforms into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights, festive markets, and cozy cafés. January also marks Icewine season, with special tastings and events at local wineries.
Best for: Holiday markets, quiet town charm, Icewine Festival (January)
Keep in mind: It’s cold, and some attractions (like Fort George) may be closed or have limited hours.
So, When’s the Best Time for Families?
If you want great weather and fewer crowds, spring and fall are ideal. If you want the full buzzing small-town experience, summer is the way to go. And if you love holiday magic, winter is a cozy, festive treat!
My personal favourite is the summer! I love the warmth, flowers everywhere, and everything is open!
