1. Old Quebec / Lower Town / Quartier Petit Champlain
Old Quebec City makes you feel like you’re walking around Europe. Old stone buildings, cobblestone streets and a beautiful view of the iconic Chateau Frontenac at the edge of the cliff.
There are two main areas of Old Quebec, Upper Town and Lower Town. Both are worth visiting and easy to do in one day, but our favourite was definitely the lower town.
Upper Town of Old Quebec
You will likely arrive at the Upper Town in Quebec City first.
It’s perfect for wandering. Take your time walking the streets and take in the views of Chateau Frontenac, a famous historic hotel built in 1893.
If you want to find out more about this historic and beautiful hotel, plus get inside without being an overnight guest, check out this Guided Tour of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.
If you’re visiting in the summer, head to Holy Trinity Cathedral, they have the cutest craft market set up with tons of handmade souvenirs and gifts.
Lower Town of Old Quebec
Getting down to Lower Town is part of the fun.
There are 2 ways to get to the lower village of Old Quebec. The first is by walking down 59 steps, called Breakneck Stairs (don’t worry, they are safe and easy to go down).
The 2nd way is a cable car ride called Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec.
We opted to walk down and gondola up, that way you get to experience both. Plus kids will love riding the cable car up the cliff! It costs $6 per ride.
The neighbourhood in the lower town, Petit-Champlain is known for their shopping. There are tons of cute store and cafes.
Definitely stop for ice cream at Chocolato for their chocolate dipped ice cream cone!
If you are looking to relax a bit, head down to the water near the Royal Battery. Kids can have fun climbing on the old cannons while you admire the historic landmark built in 1691.

2. Canyon Sainte-Anne
This park is located about 40 minutes from quebec city, you will need a car to get here but Canyon Sainte-Anne is one of our family’s favourite experiences.
There are 3 suspension bridges over beautiful waterfalls. The kids had a blast running over them as they bounced a little.
There are also hiking trails, but the highlight for us was the Air Canyon.
It’s a giant swing that pulls you back 90 metres over the canyon, then releases you forward at speeds up to 50 km/h. It’s such a fun, slightly thrilling experience.
It’s such a fun way to get a different perspective of the nature park. Get your tickets to the park with Air Canyon included here.
Another favourite activity in the park was The Legend of Petraminis. It’s an interactive trail where kids solve clues, climb, balance, and search for hidden characters in the forest. Included with your park admission.

3. Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré
As you drive back to Quebec City from Canyon Sainte-Anne, be sure to stop in the town of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré and visit the Sanctuaire Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré.
This massive church is really beautiful inside and outside. Break up the drive and walk around this peaceful area.
There are a few cafés nearby if you want to grab a drink or snack too.
4. Aquarium du Quebec
We had such a fun time visiting Aquarium du Quebec! Although the day we went was rainy, there was still so much to see and do.
There are different buildings that include outdoor and indoor areas where you can see more than 10,000 sea animals. Some favourites were:
- Walking through the dark exhibits where seahorse and jellyfish light up
- Feeding the stingray at the Deep Ocean Exhibit
- Watching the polar bears play
- The outdoor ropes course and climbing area
Aquarium du Québec is a great option for a rainy day.

5. La Vallée Secrète (The Secret Valley)
If you’re looking for something unique, La Vallée Secrète is such a fun experience.
It’s about 45 minutes from Quebec City, so you’ll need a car.
It’s located in the middle of a forest where you will be on a hunt for gnomes. There are different levels of difficulty depending on the ages of your kids. We even brought our 18 year old niece and she had fun.
Get clues and keys and solve puzzles to unlock boxes in order to find all the gnomes. It’s very well done and feels like a real adventure.
La Vallée Secrète is only open during the warmer months from May to October.
6. Montmorency Falls
Just 15 minutes from Quebec City, Montmorency Falls is one of the best and easy things to add when looking for things to do in Quebec City with kids.
There’s a lot to do here. You can ride the cable car ride, walk across the suspension bridge, take in the views from the lookout or tackle the scenic staircase with over 400 steps down to the base of the falls.
If your kids are up for it, there’s even ziplining.
It’s easy to spend a half day here. You can even combine it with Île d’Orléans for a full day of exploring.

7. Île d’Orléans
This island is right in the St. Lawrence River is just outside of Quebec City. It is a beautiful way to spend half a day exploring the cute and colourful villages.
They have vineyards, apple and berry picking (when in season), a maritime museum and more!
8. Musée de la Civilisation
Musée de la Civilisation is a great indoor option, especially if you need a break from walking or the weather isn’t great.
I have heard such good things about this museum for families. They have a ton of interactive exhibits that are family friendly.
This page on their website is dedicated to families. Also, the first Sunday of every month, kids go free!
9. The Plains of Abraham
Plains of Abraham is a large park right in the city and a great spot to take a break from a busy day of exploring.
It’s part of Battlefields Park, where battles took place in 1759 and 1760.
In the park you can enjoy the gardens, walking paths, a greenhouse, museum, monuments and even a cafe. There are often events happening too, so it’s worth checking ahead.
There are bathrooms and parking on site, which always makes things easier with kids.

10. Hop on Hop off Bus Quebec City
One of the easiest ways to explore the city, especially with kids, is on a hop on hop off bus tour.
These tours take you to all the major sites, so you don’t have to worry about navigating or walking long distances. You can get off wherever you want, explore, and then hop back on when you’re ready.
There’s also an audio guide on board, which is a nice way to learn a bit about the city as you go.
Where to Stay in Quebec City with Kids
Hotel & Suites Le Dauphin Quebec – One of our favourites! About 20 minutes from the city centre but offers plenty of free parking, breakfast, indoor pool with splash pad, and my kids favourite is the 24 hour hot chocolate machine.
L’Hôtel Québec par JARO – You will feel like you are in a true resort staying at this place. It has multiple play areas, a pool and children’s activities. A short drive from the city, but worth it if looking for some relaxing time at your hotel.
Hotel Chateau Laurier Quebec – If you’re looking to stay right in the centre of Old Quebec in a place that looks like a castle, then this is the hotel for you! Walking distance to everything in the city plus has a pool and hot tub.
