If you are looking for a fun and easy escape from the city, Caledon Ontario is the perfect day trip from Toronto as it’s just over an hour away. Caledon is packed with beautiful trails, cute coffee spots, and the kind of outdoor adventures families will love.
We recently spent the day exploring Caledon Ontario as a family, and it was the perfect mix of nature, fun, and chill. If you’re wondering what to do in Caledon, I’ve got you covered with a full day trip itinerary that’s kid-approved and parent-friendly.

How far is Caledon from Toronto?
Let’s start here, because it’s closer than you think. Caledon is just over an hour from Toronto by car, depending on traffic and where in the city you’re starting from. That makes it one of the easiest day trips from Toronto. No overnight bag required!
You will need to head west to go up the 427 and then north along Airport Rd (HWY 7). After you get out of the hustle and bustle of the city, it’s a really peaceful drive.
A car is required for this day trip from Toronto as public transport is not available.
Morning: Explore Belfountain Conservation Area
Start your day at Belfountain Conservation Area. This beautiful park along the river feels like a hidden gem with trails through forests, a waterfall, historic ruins and a scenic suspension bridge that’s perfect for photos.
Entry Fees:
You’ll need to make a reservation for Belfountain Conservation ahead of time so be sure to book online before you go! The good news is that once you pay entry to one park, it will let you into all the rest of the Credit Valley Conservation parks for the day!
The cost for entry for your vehicle is $11.30
There is also a cost per person that will be due when you arrive:
Child (0-5): Free
Youth (6-14): $3.50
Adult (15-64): $8.00
Senior (65+): $6.50
Person with Disability: $6.50

Here’s what to do in caledon
- Walk the suspension bridge: It crosses over a small gorge and waterfall. Don’t worry, it’s sturdy with beautiful views of the waterfall.
- Climb on the rocks in the river: This was my kids favorite part. Just be sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet!
- Tree climbing & forest trails: Let the kids run wild on the shady trails. There are lots of logs to balance on, trees to climb, and even a few secret paths to explore.
- Check out historic ruins and fountains: Learn about the “belle” fountain, terrace and Yellowstone Cave.
- Walk along the boardwalk: If your not a fan of trails, they have a beautiful boardwalk around the falls and fountain for you to enjoy.
It’s peaceful, beautiful, and the perfect way to kick off your Caledon adventure.
Midday: Grab Coffee or Lunch at Coywolf Coffee
After your morning hike, head just 15 minutes down the road to Coywolf Coffee in Inglewood.
This little café is so cute. It’s dog-friendly, has indoor and outdoor seating, and offers amazing drinks, snacks, and lunch options.
What we loved:
- The lattes (10/10)
- Fresh croissants and baked goods
- A relaxed vibe with big picnic tables outside and lots of space for kids to run around
Whether you need a caffeine boost or just want to rest your feet, Coywolf Coffee is the perfect midday stop.

Afternoon: Hike at Terra Cotta Conservation Area
Once you’ve recharged, drive another 15 minutes to Terra Cotta Conservation Area. This spot is great for a slower-paced nature walk if you choose as they have many different trails to choose from. They also often have events on, like the maple syrup festival in spring. So make sure to check their website for details on what’s on!
There’s a beautiful trail around the marsh with boardwalks, benches, and lots of spots to stop and watch for turtles or frogs.
Highlights here:
- Storybook Trail: A fun walk with signs from a children’s book along the way. Great for younger kids and still enjoyable for your older kids! They switch out the stories often so you always get a new book to read. The last time we were there was a book about David Suzuki which was really interesting.
- Marsh lookout: You’ll find a peaceful wooden viewing platform with stunning views of the water and forest.
- Easy trails: Most paths are flat and stroller-friendly. Ideal if your younger kids are getting tired but still want to explore.
Pro tip: Bring bug spray in the summer months for those mosquitoes and ticks. This is the forest, after all!
Optional Stops Nearby
If you have more time or want to swap something out, here are a few other family-friendly spots nearby:
- Cheltenham Badlands: Just a 10-minute drive from Belfountain. The red, rolling hills of the Badlands look like Mars. It’s a really cool spot with a short walk through the trees to get to. Keep in mind there’s no climbing allowed but it’s great for a quick photo stop!
- Spirit Tree Estate Cidery: Grab a cider for the adults and wood-fired pizza for everyone.
Why Caledon Is Perfect for Families
I always look for day trips that work well for kids in that 8–12 age range and provide outdoor adventures, and Caledon really delivers. There’s just the right amount of hiking, climbing, and exploring, without being too intense or too boring.
Here’s why we love it:
- Nature that feels adventurous, but still safe
- Trails they can lead the way on
- Spots to climb, run, and get a little muddy
- Fun food stops with outdoor seating
It’s a great way to spend a screen-free day with kids that won’t leave everyone totally exhausted by the end.

Final Tips for Visiting Caledon
- Book parking in advance at Belfountain if going in spring, summer, or fall.
- Wear comfy shoes with grip for the rocky parts near the water.
- Bring extra clothes or towels if your kids (or you!) like to climb in rivers.
- Watch for ticks in forested areas and do a quick check at the end of the day.
- Make a playlist for the drive, it’s just long enough for some car karaoke!
