In this guide, I will show you how to spend a perfect weekend in Philadelphia, especially if you have young kids.
Philadelphia really surprised me with how much it was packed with history, fun and loads of Philly flavour! It was great to teach our kids about American history and be able to learn alongside them.
Read on as we embark on a journey that surprised even this Canadian crew!

Day 1: Stepping Back in Time
Stop 1: Independence Square
Start your Philly family adventure in the heart of history at Independence Square.
First thing, head to the Independence Visitors Center. Here, they do a great job of setting the stage with interactive displays and videos, making history come alive for everyone.
Next, have a stroll through the grounds of the Independence National Historical Park. You will encounter famous landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
We found ourselves absorbed in the fascinating tale of American history.
Step inside Independence Hall where staff are there to answer any questions you have.
We learned this is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776! Even if you are not a history buff, this building, built in the 1700’s is beautiful to look at.

Stop 2: Delaware River Activities
Make your way down Chestnut Street to the Delaware River and experience a journey underwater!
The Submarine tour at the Independence Seaport Museum took us back to 1944, exploring life aboard the Becuna Submarine.
Our guide turned a history lesson into an engaging experience for both kids and adults.
I highly recommend this tour. It was about 40 minutes through each room of the Becuna Submarine.
We all found it really fascinating to see what sailor life would have been like in 1944 when it first sailed.

Post-submarine adventure, take a leisurely stroll along the Delaware River’s boardwalk at Spruce Street Harbor Park.
Picture hammocks, swings, and a giant red “Philadelphia With Love” chair! The perfect spot to relax before heading to the next stop.
Stop 3: Elfreth’s Alley and Betsy House
For a dose of colonial charm, meander down Elfreth’s Alley, a narrow street dating back to 1720, filled with colour and cobblestones.
If you’re looking for Instagrammable worthy photos, this is the perfect spot!
If you’re interested, they offer a museum, gift shop and guided tours, none of which we took advantage of. We just enjoyed walking around.

If time permits, a detour to the Betsy House is a must. This historical gem was home to the woman who sewed the first American flag in 1776.
There are tables and chairs set up outside to stop for a snack. Also check out the gift shop on the ground floor of the house.
You can’t leave Philadelphia without a taste of the local goodness. Make sure to stop for dinner, a Philly Cheesesteak, at the iconic restaurant, Cleavers.

Day 2: Art, Parks, and Science Magic!
Stop 1: Dilworth and Love Park
Start your morning at Dilworth Park. The kids will love running through the fountains, while you soak in the city vibes.
There is a roller skating rink there as well although sadly, it wasn’t open when we went.
Right across the street is Love Park with the iconic Philadelphia signs, “LOVE” and “I love Philly”. You will want to stop and have the obligatory family photo session!
Stop 2: Train Like Rocky
Next on the agenda – a workout with a view! Run up the famous “Rocky Steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Then snap a picture with the Rocky statue at the bottom of the steps.
Before heading to your next stop, pop into Peddler Coffee for a delish treat and caffeine.
We are always on the hunt for that perfect coffee, definitely give the latte’s a try here!

Stop 3: The Franklin Institute
My favourite part of Philadelphia was visiting The Franklin Institute.
This mega science museum had us all hooked with interactive exhibits. This place was huge!
It was full of interactive games, displays and fun for the whole family. I actually wish we could have spent more time here.
Some of our favourite exhibits were exploring “the heart”. You can walk through the arteries (aka tunnels) learning how the heart pumps blood all over your body.
There is also a large climbing structure which the kids enjoyed. It simulates the electricity in the brain.
You can be a meteorologist and record yourself giving the weather report.
There is something for the space lover, train fanatic and sports enthusiast.
If you’re bringing your kids to Philadelphia, this is definitely a family friendly activity that is sure to please.

This was a full day of fun and walking. Your kids are sure to sleep well after today!
Getting around on your Philadelphia family getaway
And how did we navigate this adventure-packed city?
We found the easiest and most inexpensive way to get around to all the tourist attractions was to use the Philly Phlash bus. Philly Phlash
You can get an all day pass for only $5. Kids 4 and under are free. We splurged on a two-day pass for a steal at $9.
Every 15 minutes, like clockwork, it whisked us from one adventure to the next.
It’s important to know that the Philly Phlash buses don’t run from December to April.
It’s also worth noting to pay attention to the times, depending on what stop you’re at, the last bus could be anywhere from 5:30 to 6:15.

Where did we stay for our philadelphia family getaway?
Philadelphia welcomed us with open arms, and we opted for an apartment booked through VRBO.
Just a skip away from the Philly Phlash bus stop at 12th and Market Street, this two-bedroom haven with a kitchen became our home away from home.
With breakfasts and easy on-the-go lunches whipped up in our cosy kitchen, we embraced the convenience of walking and public transit, leaving our car to catch a breather for the whole weekend.
There are also a ton of hotels in the area as well if that is more your style.
Conclusion: Philly, You Stole Our Hearts!
In a city where history mingles with fun and cheesesteaks, Philadelphia exceeded our expectations.
So, fellow family wanderers, pack your bags, round up your little explorers, and let Philly work its magic. I hope you enjoy a Philadelphia family getaway just as much as we did.
