Experience the Magic of a Maltese Village Festa.
A tiny island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is a country steeped in history, culture, and tradition. One of the most exciting experiences for both locals and visitors is attending a village festa.
We have been to Malta 3 times now and never miss an opportunity to attend at least one village Festa.

Traditionally the festa is a catholic celebration in honour of the patron saint of the village.
These vibrant celebrations are a kaleidoscope of lights, fireworks, food, and the joyful hum of crowds.
This year was the first time we brought our kids to Malta and visited 2 different Festa’s.
The event itself is usually a weekend long party, including a beautiful fireworks show on the last day. But there are many events leading up to the final weekend that often last the whole month. Including band performances and church services.
Lights That Illuminate the Night:
As the sun dips below the horizon, Maltese villages come to life with a dazzling display of lights.
The narrow European streets are decorated with banners and flags, and every corner is lit up in a mesmerising array of colours.
Families with kids will be captivated by the magical ambiance, as the entire village is transformed into a wonderland of twinkling lights.
Fireworks Painting the Sky:
No Maltese festa is complete without a spectacular fireworks display. The bursts of colour and thunderous explosions overhead create a breathtaking spectacle.
Families can gather in the village square to witness this awe-inspiring show that’s timed perfectly with music.
For parents with young children, it’s advisable to bring ear protection to ensure a comfortable experience for the little ones.
On top of the sky fireworks, Maltese villages also have a tradition called ground fireworks, or cikcivogu (sounds like chook-chav-ooki). In English, they are called Catherine Wheels.
These ground fireworks are really unique and fascinating to watch.
I would describe it as different wooden structures and mechanisms that rotate around wheels on the ground while shooting fireworks out of its sides. They make all sorts of squealing noises too.

GRAB SOME FOOD:
Maltese festas often have food trucks parked everywhere as well as the local restaurants and band clubs to offer an array of local delicacies that tantalise the taste buds.
From traditional pastizzi and freshly grilled fish to sweet nougat and honey rings, there’s something to satisfy every palate.
Families can explore the food stalls lining the festa grounds, allowing kids to indulge in delicious treats while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
The Joyful Hum of Crowds and Music:

The festa’s are for everyone, from babies, to teens to grandparents! Everyone came out to enjoy themselves.
