This 6 day road trip itinerary from Toronto takes you through Pennsylvania’s small towns, unique attractions and plenty of fun. It also brings you to one of America’s most historic cities.
We did this road trip with our kids who were 6 and 8 and we all had such a great time! The trick with road trips is to take lots of stops along the way to enjoy the journey. This guide breaks down exactly where to stop, stay and play along the way.

How far is it from Toronto to Philadelphia?
Driving from Toronto to Philadelphia takes about 8 hours without stops, depending on where you start in the Toronto area. But we like to take our time, making lots of stops which I have shared in this itinerary for you to enjoy too!
Border Crossing Tips
Crossing the border is easy, but here are a few things to keep in mind before you go:
- Don’t forget your passports (even for the kids).
- If you’re not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, check whether you need a visa or ESTA.
- Avoid bringing items on the restricted list. You can check the official list here.
Make a quick stop at the Duty Free shop before crossing the bridge. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs, grab a snack or coffee and use the washroom.
Day 1: Toronto – Corning, NY – Williamsport, Pennsylvania
Leave Toronto in the morning (whatever time you can, we are not early birds!!!) and head for your first stop: The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.

Now I know this sounds like a bizarre place to stop on a road trip with kids. I was definitely nervous when my husband suggested it. But there are interactive displays, a glass-blowing presentation, and even a scavenger hunt for kids. If you have time, you can even make your own glass creation as a keepsake.

After your museum stop, drive about 1.5 hours to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, your first overnight stop.
Where to Stay in Williamsport
Williamsport is a charming town with restaurants, hotels and a bit of history.

Day 2: Williamsport – Hershey – Philadelphia
After breakfast, hop back in the car for a 1.5-hour drive to Hershey, Pennsylvania. As you may have guessed, it is the home of Hershey Chocolate and here you can enjoy all things Hershey!
Visit Hershey Chocolate World
If you love chocolate, you’ll be in heaven here. Start with the Hershey Chocolate Tour. It is a free ride in a giant Hershey’s Kiss that shows how chocolate is made. As a bonus, the ride ends with a free chocolate sample!
There are also other paid activity options such as a trolley ride and shows. For extra fun, try the Create Your Own Candy Bar experience. You’ll choose your ingredients, design your own label, and watch your bar being made right in front of you. It’s around $29 per person and worth every bite!
Afterward, explore the gift shop and grab some Hershey themed souvenirs.
If you have more time, Hershey Park amusement park is right next door and packed with roller coasters and family rides.
Lunch on Chocolate Avenue
Head to Lisa’s Cafe on Chocolate on Chocolate Avenue (told you everything is chocolate related!) for lunch and a great coffee. It’s located inside the same building as The Hershey Story Museum, which is also worth a visit if you have extra time.
After lunch continue your drive to Philadelphia. It’s just over 2 hours drive, where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Philadelphia has tons of great family friendly places to stay, most within walking distance of major attractions.

We were able to park across the street and leave our car for the entire time in Philadelphia, relying on walking and public transit which was perfect.

Day 3: Exploring Philadelphia’s Historic Sights
Philadelphia is full of history, charm, and fun. You will be surprised at how kid friendly it is!
Where History Comes Alive
Start your day in Independence Square. Visit the Independence Visitor Center, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. You can walk between them all easily.
Next, head to the Independence Seaport Museum along the Delaware River. The Becuna Submarine Tour is a hit with kids (and adults).
Take a walk down Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest residential street in the U.S., for some great photos. You can also stop by Betsy Ross House, where the first American flag was sewn.
For dinner : Try a Philly Cheesesteak!
End the day at Cleavers, known for its delicious Philadelphia cheesesteaks and family friendly vibe.
Day 4: More Philly Fun
Start your morning at Dilworth Park and grab a photo with the iconic LOVE sign.
If you’re a movie buff, don’t miss the famous Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Run up the steps and then take a photo with the Rocky statue at the bottom!
Then spend your afternoon at The Franklin Institute. This place was so amazing, probably one of the best science centers in the U.S. This massive museum is packed with hands-on exhibits about space, trains, the human body and more. It is perfect for curious kids of all ages.
Getting Around Philadelphia
Getting around is easy! You can walk, take public transit, or we recommend hopping on the Philly Phlash bus, which stops at all major attractions every 15 minutes.
A 2-day adult pass is just $9 and it takes you to all major attractions during the day.
Day 5: Philadelphia – Penn’s Cave – Ellicottville
Time to loop your way back up north. After breakfast, check out and drive 3.5 hours to Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park. This place is a true hidden gem!
Explore Penn’s Cave
This has to be one of Pennsylvania’s coolest attractions! It is a guided boat tour through an underground cave.
You’ll see incredible rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. You will also experience total darkness when the guides turn off their flashlights!
Tours last about 45 minutes, and your guide shares fun facts and stories along the way. This place is totally worth a stop.
After the cave, continue your drive about 3.5 hours to Ellicottville, New York, where you’ll stay overnight.

Ellicottville is a charming ski town that’s equally fun in summer.
Day 6: Ellicottville – Toronto
Before heading home, stop by Holiday Valley Resort. If you’re visiting in summer they have so many activities. Try their mountain coaster, pools or zipline course. It is a fun way to end your trip.
The drive back to Toronto is about 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and your final destination.
